The volumes record payments of interest on the public debt. Prior to the Civil War the names of payees are entered; after the war only total amounts of coupons redeemed are recorded. The series contains: 1, October 1, 1853 - December 17, 1855; 2, January 1, 1856 - April 1, 1865; May 30, 1867 - June 30, 1894; 3, July 1, 1894 - December 31, 1921.

An act of the General Assembly approved March 23, 1839, provided for additional capital for the James River and Kanawha Company. The Company was given full power to borrow on the credit of the corporate funds, $1,500,000.
